Advantages of non-destructive testing (NDT) on steel structures and concrete buildings

What are Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Methods and What Are They Used For?

Non-destructive testing (NDT) methods are tests that allow us to assess the quality of materials used in the construction of steel and concrete structures and evaluate the condition of existing buildings.

These types of tests are essential to ensure the safety and reliability of both public and private structures. They also help prevent future repair costs of a building and determine the real state of old constructions (bridges, overpasses, pipelines, refineries, etc.).

The methods used in non-destructive testing are based on the application of physical phenomena on the materials and/or structures: electromagnetic, acoustic, and/or elastic waves, subatomic particles, among others. The best attribute of NDT is that they do not alter the surface where they are applied.

10 Main Advantages of Performing NDT on Materials and Buildings

Non-destructive testing makes it possible to determine the stress levels of beams within a structure and detect any defects in the steel, welding, paint, and connections of the framework. This allows you to:

1. Avoid costly repairs of a metal structure

By detecting defects in parts and materials in advance, ensuring the integrity and strength of structural elements, future repair expenses can be avoided.

It is also a cost-effective way to perform maintenance tests on older infrastructure.

2. Mitigate the effects of a natural disaster

NDT can determine if a building or metal structure is particularly vulnerable to a natural disaster.

For instance, there are welding defects that are difficult to detect visually, which can cause joint failure if the structure is exposed to unusual pressure. NDT allows these types of defects to be detected and fixed before the assembly of the framework is completed.

3. Determine the condition of existing buildings

Ultrasonic NDT methods can be used to determine the stress levels of the structural elements of an old building or constructions with incorporated beams. Based on the results, it can be determined what type of reinforcements the structures need: tightening bolts, retouching the protective paint, improving the welding, etc. Sometimes, minor repairs can significantly extend a building’s lifespan.

4. Assess the seismic vulnerability of the framework

During the construction of buildings, bridges, and other large structures, NDT techniques using radiation can be employed to detect defects like cracks that could severely impact the building during an earthquake.

It is necessary to conduct these types of tests to eliminate hidden defects in the structure and comply with the requirements of the Seismic Design and Analysis Code from the Ministry of Public Works and Communications of the Dominican Republic.

5. Verify that the construction elements meet quality standards

Codes like the ASTM certification for NDT provide technical standards for the quality of materials, products, systems, and services, which serve as a guide when evaluating the design and construction of a metal or concrete structure.

Having a reliable reference for measuring the results of non-destructive testing makes it easier to determine whether the materials and structural elements meet the necessary quality and strength standards.

6. Minimize environmental impact during evaluation

NDT allows for inspections and evaluations without the need to destroy or alter structures, significantly reducing the environmental impact. By not generating additional waste or requiring materials for destructive testing, it promotes more sustainable practices in the construction industry.

7. Increase workplace safety

Regularly performing NDT helps identify problems in a structure before they become safety hazards for workers. Detecting potential structural failures or defective materials in advance can prevent accidents and ensure a safer working environment at the construction site.

8. Extend the lifespan of structures

Continuous evaluation using NDT allows for early detection of wear and deterioration, enabling preventive rather than corrective maintenance. This proactive maintenance strategy not only saves costs but also extends the lifespan of metal and concrete structures.

9. Reduce downtime in industrial operations

NDT can be performed without interrupting the normal operations of an industrial facility. This is crucial for industries where downtime can lead to significant losses, as it allows for inspections and repairs without stopping production.

10. Compatibility with advanced technologies and continuous monitoring techniques

Non-destructive testing can be integrated with advanced structural monitoring systems that provide real-time data on the infrastructure’s condition. This continuous monitoring capability facilitates a quick response to any anomalies detected, enhancing timely and efficient intervention.

How Ingeniería Metálica Can Help You Conduct Successful NDT

At Ingeniería Metálica, we have NDT Systems, a specialized division in non-destructive testing for reinforced concrete and steel structures. Our NDT allows you to ensure the quality and safety of your civil, industrial, and commercial projects.

We have over 10 years of experience performing NDT in the private and civil sectors. We were hired by the World Bank to evaluate the buildings affected by the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, and we have conducted NDT on over 200 buildings in the Dominican Republic.

Among the non-destructive studies we conduct and the services we offer are:

  • Visual inspection (FEMA 351-353, AISC)
  • Preparation of structural plans (AS BUILT)
  • Ground Penetrating Radar
  • Mapping of footings and foundations
  • Strength and integrity tests: Sclerometer (ASTM-805), Ultrasonic (ASTM-C-597), Windsor Probe Test (ASTMC-803), Concrete Core Extraction (ACI-318)
  • Dynamic analysis: seismic vulnerability assessment of existing buildings, design, and analysis of seismic-resistant buildings (according to the latest seismic code of the Dominican Republic), tests for special buildings (silos, water tanks, etc.)
